VOLUNTEERS

HARDWORKING HANDS AND CARING HEARTS

Southwest Decadence recognizes the roles of volunteers to facilitate a successful event and understands that different volunteers can contribute different skills and abilities. Most people volunteer for the joy of helping and we value that unselfish generosity.  As one gesture of appreciation, official volunteers will receive a discount at registration based on number of hours committed.

  • 4 hours = 20% discount of registration rate (at time of registration)
  • 8 hours = 40% discount of registration rate (at time of registration)
  • Wrecking Crew = Full Registration Provided

Interested volunteers must complete the Volunteer Application before registering and paying for the event. We will try our best to accommodate all volunteer needs.

BAG CHECK ATTENDANT - DANCE OF SOULS
These volunteers keep track of bags for folks who are participating in the Sunday afternoon Dance Of Souls Souls and check armbands of those entering. This is a great spot to greet people as they enter this sacred space and offer a smile when they leave.

BAG CHECK ATTENDANT – PLAY PARTIES
The dungeons are roomier without bags and boxes of toys taking up space. Dungeon Bag Check Attendants receive toy bags, tag them and hold them while attendees wait for that just perfect piece of equipment, watch the fun, or just socialize outside of the dungeon. This is a late night position.

BOOTBLACK LOUNGE HOST
Bootblack Lounge volunteers assist with maintaining orderly schedules, providing charming conversation to those waiting, assisting bootblacks with minor errands such as refilling water bottles, and general tidying of the lounge. This position is for the fun-at-heart and requires a sense of humor and sincere desire to help.

DUNGEON MONITOR
Dungeon Monitors are patient and courteous people familiar with general SM etiquette and safety issues who are willing to enforce these rules in a polite and respectful manner. They may also function as ambassadors; explaining what equipment is available and answering attendee's many questions including where to find the bathroom, first aid stations (but Dungeon Monitors are not Medics), and cleaning supplies.

REFLECTION ROOM SENTINEL
Are you spiritually aware, capable of holding sacred space, and willing to do so for at least two hours at a time? A Sentinels duties include welcoming visitors to the Reflection Room, keeping everyone respectfully quiet, setting the general tone for sacred practice for whoever is in the room, and maintaining the physical state of the space.

REGISTRATION GREETER
Greeters will assist with registration check-in, provide directions, offer information, and answer questions as needed. They provide a friendly smile to welcome all guests to the event.

SECURITY
The Security Team helps to protect various areas of the conference as well as making sure the attendees are adhering to the rules of the hotel and conference. Security volunteers are chosen at the discretion of the Security Lead.

STAGEHAND
Stagehands assist with the Saturday evening Decadence Follies: preparing the room, backstage assistance, and break down. Quick thinking and ability to do some heavy lifting and ladder climbing is a must.

WORKSHOP MONITOR
Workshop monitor responsibilities include confirming room set-up, welcoming and introducing speakers, recording the attendance of the presentation they are assigned to, keeping time, and thanking the presenter.

WRECKING CREW
This group of able bodied and robust folks handle the general set-up and break-down for the weekend activities: Event Set-Up, Dungeon Set-Up and Break-down, Dance Of Souls Set-Up and Break-Down, and Event Break-Down. Specific tasks run from Thursday evening through Sunday evening. Wrecking Crew volunteers might work 12-14 hours throughout the weekend and will receive a full weekend package….and a tube of BioFreeze.

Please do not request to be on the Wrecking Crew if you cannot work late night on Friday and Saturday (ie: 2:00  am – 3:00 am)

Event Set-Up

Carrying in supplies and equipment, moving tables, setting up curtains, arranging displays, etc. Some heavy lifting and/or ladder climbing is necessary.

Dungeon Set-Up
These volunteers assist with preparing the play spaces on Friday and Saturday evenings. They must be physically able to lift, carry, and move heavy items and equipment quickly and efficiently.

Dungeon Break-down
Night owls can help after the play parties are over on Friday and Saturday nights. Work together to move equipment, clean-up, and clear the spaces. These dedicated volunteers must be able to carry out some heavy lifting. Late night hours are involved.

Dance Of Souls Set-Up and Break-Down
Help set the room on Sunday morning and prep it for the Dance Of Souls….then clear it all out later that afternoon.

Event Break-Down
The crew works on Sunday afternoon and evening to make sure the conference center doesn’t look like someone came in like a wrecking ball. Some of the tasks include packing up supplies, removing signage, and carrying equipment out.
